EC-CHAP Film Series: "Bonnie Raitt”

This film project is the brainchild of “Musical Myriad” host Arthur Rovozzo, WECS Radio, 90.1FM.

Arthur’s extensive musical knowledge and passion for historical roots has led to the development of this unique 5-part series.

As Arthur describes:

“Many people are Bonnie Raitt fans, but came to the table a bit late - after Bonnie's great successes on Capitol Recordsas a Grammy Award winner. Bonnie had a long career before that breakthrough. In the 1960's Bonnie took a musicalpath that may have surprised her Broadway and theatrical star Dad, learning Folk Music, then studying blues guitarwith Fred McDowell and Muddy Waters, blues vocals with Sippie Wallace.

In the dawn of the 1970's, Raitt was already recording albums for Warner Brothers with her distinctive intertwining ofSoul, Blues, Singer/Songwriter, West Coastisms and Rock. She attracted a core fandom of 100,000 listeners but thatwas not enough for the satisfaction of a corporate music company. After a lengthy run of albums, Warner Brothersdropped her and Capitol staged a career rescue which proved to be highly profitable....for all involved!

We are planning to screen two Marley film artifacts: the original Wailers concept with three male singers,(originally Bob, Peter Tosh & Bunny Livingston), is referenced in a music set with vocal assists from Jamaican music scene veteran Joe Higgs. Part two captures the updated Wailers with three female voices, (I-Threes), backing Bob. Their intense performance at the Rainbow Theater in the U.K. was famously released on LP!."

On our movie night we plan to feature material from both phases of Raitt's amazing body of work: excerpts of a1970's era televised concert will encapsulate her Warner's album sequence with some favor lay repertoire tunes, while the 1980s to New Millenium material will dominate concert films taken during tours, (with special guest artists occasionally appearing). You will witness evidence of why Bonnie's Blues-based slide guitar skill is so highly praised, along with the fantastic vocals. The late Fred McDowell would certainly approve!

“At the beginning of the 1970s it was a rarity to find anyone in North America that was all that familiar with Reggae music. Few music fans knew of Bob Marley at the time. The ear-deafened first half of the decade found rock fans mostly unaware of a potential tidal wave of Jamaican Music, despite the Johnny Nashhit "I Can See Clearly Now" and singer turned actor Jimmy Cliff hitting midnight theater showings with star vehicle film, "The Harder They Come". For most people, Reggae only registered as an oddball rhythmic choice made by a few non-Jamaican British and U.S. musicians on their singles. It took the combined efforts of punk bands, new wave players, The Rolling Stones and a number of in-the-know rock critics to introduce even a minority of pop listeners to Reggae. Then came Bob Marley. & The Wailers. Their early promotional live appearances were not all successful here, once getting thrown off a tour by Sly & The Family Stone did not help, but the power of the music could not be denied.

“On May 2nd at The Packing House we’ll be exploring Great Guitarists. With this set of film and TV clips, we intend to cover a lot of ground with a number of rock and blues masters, dropping-in a few surprise choices for good measure. A couple of the players selected will be ones we've seen and heard in our series previously, but none of the films will be repeats of the exact material we've shown before. Instead of only featuring the biggest stars, we will have footage of some lesser-known yet important players, and all are legends.

The choices are still to be finalized, although you can count on each performer being well worth seeing and hearing as they burn-up the fretboards in concert settings."

“On April 25th at The Packing House we’ll be featuring The Allman Brothers Band. The Allman Brothers band underwent tremendous changes throughout its existence, in large part due to the repeated tragedies of losing group members to accidents. Luckily, the ABB was filmed on many occasions, before and after the departure of mercurial founding member and co-leading guitarist Dicky Bets (who recently passed away).

We plan to view several seasons of ABB incarnations in excerpts from performances in the USA and Europe; most songs include extended, instrumental, soloing, an Allman's trademark. And even though most of the other southern bands tend towards a country-rock amalgam, the Allmans loved the blues."

“On March 28th at The Packing House we're featuring The Doors. The Doors have been one of those groups that have fascinated mystified and frustrated their fans both during the group’s active years and after their dissolution. Part of the frustration was and is related to vocalist Jim Morrison's extremely unpredictable unreliable nature.

The other side of the coin being the irony that a band, composed of former film school students, did not always have themselves filmed effectively! Be that as it may, we plan to take a look at clips from throughout the group’s prime years. On an early tour there were black-and-white sequences of performances from when the band was co-headlining shows with the Jefferson Airplane. Other occasions found a group filmed in action in color, with underrated guitarist Robbie Krieger well featured. The performance moods are all over the map, a Doors tradition."

“On February 14th at The Packing House we're planning to feature Janis Joplin. Joplin made her most decisive career altering appearances at major rock music festivals. However there are film clips of the vocalist from other times and places that we planned to view excerpts of.

The second half of the night's presentation will be a part documentary part music performance film concerning the scheme of several rock promoters to create a rolling Woodstock on wheels that could travel around North America with eight or nine bands stopping to give concerts at various venues.

Janis Joplin not only got involved, she essentially commandeered the whole plan and turned it into her own personal 24 hour a day party. There are appearances by many other artists in this survey of a train trip gone wildly mad, including Robbie Robertson and the band .”

“On January 24th at The Packing House we're planning to begin the show with recently departed guitarist extraordinaire Jeff Beck. We had seen and heard Jeff back during our British invasion show of TV program excerpts last spring. This time around - no Yardbirds - rather Jeff as an already well established group leader and star.

Beck will display two aspects of his career, paying tribute to his very earliest guitar influences from the 1950s, then switching over to his technically astounding, advanced soloing methods which he first explored on the hit albums ‘Blow by Blow’ and ‘Wired’ in the mid 1970s. These benchmark recordings set the course for the rest of Jeff's life in music.”

“On March 22nd at The Packing House we're planning to have a different kind of music movie night - one with virtually no hit songs. Eric Clapton Jamming The Blues will be pretty much true to the title and theme. Expect a lot of powerhouse music and guitar solos but do not expect the typical hits from the 1970’s through the 1990’s. Instead of MTV style commercialism we’ll have clips of Eric Clapton, working with Bruce and Baker in the band Cream; playing cameo appearances with blues guitarist comrades and legends and having a blues summit with guest musicians at a prestigious concert venue. These film excerpts verify that Clapton has kept returning to his core obsession with the blues to re-energize his career over the years."
