ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

PATTY TUITE

In the 1980’s she began listening to blues musicians and emulating their styles.

Patty began playing guitar out in public and singing at open mic sessions in Springfield, MA during the early the early 1990’s.  This led to her first well received live recording in 1996 “Live At The Tic Toc.”

Her first blues-based band, The Patty Tuite Band, formed in 1999, playing throughout the Southern New England region, gaining fans at clubs, functions, and summer concert festivals.  This experience led to her second recording “Girls Night Out” in 2001 and then “Blond and Blue” in 2007.

The band competed in the finals of the Connecticut Blues Society (CTBS) “Blues Challenge” in 2001 and 2005. Due to her showing at the CTBS statewide competitions, two of Patty’s originals were included on the CTBS compilation CDs, “Local Flavor” (2003) and “Blue State Blues” (2007). She also became a judge for the CT Blues Challenge on two occasions.

As well as playing blues from 2007-2017 with two more bands, the Boilermakers and the Percolators, Patty branched out into jazz and played with an eastern CT band, Blue Steam, in 2012. It was a creative and expansive collaboration together, not only playing standards, but reinterpreting popular songs with a jazz bent.

In 2016, Patty created The Patty Tuite Group, playing a mix of originals, blues, jazz and rock favorites.   They played some of her original material live for the Northeast CT Musicians Collaborative which was aired on Spectrum TV in 2018.  The band became very active playing local clubs throughout Southern New England.

In 2021 Patty and her husband Jim formed a new independent record label, Thread City Productions, which the past two releases came out on.

Introducing THE HALL MONITORS, a group of top-notch New England jazz musicians brought together through the love of playing, composing, arranging, AND teaching. Steven Bulmer, bass; Nathan Edwards, saxes; Matt Parker, sax/flute; Jen Allen, Piano; Ben Bilello, drums.

The members are all honored to be jazz coaches at the prestigious Hall High School in West Hartford CT, as well as educators at numerous colleges and universities throughout the region. The group performs a variety of jazz styles from bop, hard bop and contemporary jazz genres. They program inventive originals i along with original treatments of not-so-standard jazz classics. The group features a classic piano-bass-drums rhythm section with two innovative and complementary saxophonists.

In May of 2023, the opportunity to launch the group came from an invitation to perform at the Blue Room in CitySpace, Easthampton, MA for Carol’s Jazz Night concert. The group presented a 90-minute set of 11 tunes, including 5 originals from 3 different band members. All that was needed now was a name. After pushing many failed pun-names around trying to work off of the word “Hall,” the Hall Monitors‘ moniker was adopted. The Hall Monitors have delighted audiences through engagements with Hartford Jazz Society, Black Eyed Sally’s, The Packing House, the Buttonwood Tree and CitySpace Easthampton. The group is also profiled on CreativeGround.org

Join us for a special evening of jazz with The Hall Monitors! This program is hosted by the "Eastern Connecticut Center for History, Art, and Performance" (EC-CHAP).Doors 7:00pm / Show 7:30pm. Tickets $20.00 in advance online / $25.00 at the door.

SUGGESTED DONATION $5.00

L to R: Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon, Pierre Michelot, John McLaughlin, and Billy Higgins in a scene from ’Round Midnight (photo: Courtesy of the Criterion Collection)

Round Midnight is a 1986 musical drama film directed by Bertrand Tavernier and written by Tavernier and David Rayfiel. It stars Dexter Gordon, François Cluzet, and Herbie Hancock, the latter of whom also composed the film's soundtrack. Martin Scorsese, Philippe Noiret, and Wayne Shorter appear in cameos.

Gordon was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor and won a Grammy for the film's soundtrack entitled The Other Side of Round Midnight in the category for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance, Soloist. Hancock won the Academy Award for Best Original Score. The soundtrack was released in two parts: Round Midnight and The Other Side of Round Midnight.

The story takes place In the 1950s, Dale Turner (Dexter Gordon), a gifted black saxophonist with a drinking problem, leaves behind New York and his estranged family and relocates to Paris. There he plays for a progressive, jazz-loving audience without being judged by his race, and ages quietly in peace. Not intending to turn away from his vices, Dale nonetheless becomes the project of a French fan (François Cluzet) who tries to help him fight his alcoholism, ultimately inspiring both Dale and his music. - ROTTEN TOMATOES

Dexter Gordon as Dale Turner in ’Round Midnight (photo: Courtesy of the Criterion Collection)

Tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon turns thespian and plays the Powell-type figure. I want to say that he plays himself, but he doesn’t quite do that, except insofar as the man knew what he knew, and that knowledge—of his friends, his rivals, his various iterations of self over the course of his own career—is brought to bear on the film.

My sense is that Gordon and the rest of the musicians who are a part of the movie—Herbie Hancock (who also contributed the soundtrack), Tony Williams, John McLaughlin, Billy Higgins, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson (this is a crazy list, no?)—had no problem informing Tavernier of what rang true and what didn’t. The resonance is pure, like a killer tone that could only come from one individual, on that one instrument.

Gordon was only in his early sixties when the film was made. He’d die just a few years after its release, aged 67. His character, Dale Turner, is reborn in Paris, even as we have the sense that he’s cognizant this will be a final flourishing for him. Gordon talks and emotes unlike anyone I’ve seen in a movie. It’s how he was. The voice is flowing gravel, a purring poetry of sediment and hard edges mellowed by a faith in the power of art. He’s drinking himself to death too, and treated like a child who can’t look after its own well-being, by a cavalcade of characters who 1) want him to be okay and 2) also need him to get to the gig on time. We have the metaphysics of art, and the practicality of business. The jazz mélange, for one who wants to make it—as a pioneer of sound and as a working, eating musician. - Colin Fleming, JAZZ TIMES

Dexter Gordon in 1982 (photo: Enid Farber)

"Round Midnight is a superbly crafted music world drama in which Gallic director Bertrand Tavernier pays a moving dramatic tribute to the great black musicians who

lived and performed in Paris in the late 1950s." - Variety Staff, Variety

"No actor could do what the great jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon does in 'Round Midnght." - Janet Maslin, New York Time

SUGGESTED DONATION $5.00

“I think music is an instrument. It can create the initial thought patterns that can change the thinking of the people” – John Coltrane

Trane Tracks: The Legacy of John Coltrane is a Brit-produced documentary covering the life of the musician of the title. Coltrane himself needs little introduction, given his virtual invention of hard bop with the breakthrough albums Blue Train (1957), Giant Steps (1959), Coltrane Plays the Blues (1960), and My Favorite Things (1960) among dozens and dozens of others. Within a remarkably brief span, Coltrane became - along with Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie - one of the founding fathers not simply of bop but of the jazz idiom per se.

Through exclusive interviews, video clips and rare photos, this monumental DVD uncovers the life and career of one of the most influential and revolutionary musicians of the 20th Century, Tenor and soprano saxophonist John Coltrane. Considered to be jazz’s great soul searcher, Coltrane was on a continual quest to uncover new musical terrain, and in his search, he forever changed the face of jazz as he himself evolved.

This eighty-minute program draws upon extensive performance and archival footage, and countless interviews with McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Ron Carter, Benny Bailey, and Eddie Marshall shed considerable light on the man. Features footage of Coltrane on: So What (with Miles Davis); Afro Blue; Alabama; Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye; Naima; Impressions; Impressions (featuring Eric Dolphy); My Favorite Things; and My Favorite Things (featuring Eric Dolphy). Also includes video clips of Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Hodges, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Thelonious Monk, Art Ensemble of Chicago, and Elvin Jones Quartet.

EC-CHAP Jazz  Series: Luke Hendon with Jack Soref - An Evening of Gypsy Jazz

Tickets $20.00 in Advance (ONLINE) / $25.00 at the Door

EC-CHAP MEMBER DISCOUNTS & FREQUENT FLYER PROGRAM AVAILABLE

SPECIAL NOTE: EC-CHAP is excited to have Luke Hendon return to The Packing House stage this spring Luke brings his own original qualities to the Gypsy Jazz tradition of Django Reinhardt.

LUKE HENDON has had success in the world of Django music, performing with top players from around the world. A Veteran guitarist, Luke has had many successes in his career. He has opened for legendary acts such as Al Green, Sun Ra, and Los Lobos, performed on Broadway, composed and recorded for television and film, worked with dance ensembles, cruise ships, theatre companies, and many, many bands.

Luke is among the notable guitar staff/artist instructors who have taught at the acclaimed Django in June Gypsy Jazz event held at Smith College, North Hampton, MA.

Hendon travelled to Europe to a Sinti camp to study with Paulus Schafer and Fapy Lafertin.  Upon his return to the U.S. he recorded Silk and Steel, an album of original gypsy jazz compositions.   Silk & Steel, Luke Hendon draws from the tradition of the legendary gypsy guitar of Django Reinhardt and comes out swinging, soulful, funky, fresh, and innovative with his own project. In this stripped down acoustic setting, Luke's guitar takes center stage.   "I sort of got obsessed with learning a bunch of Django Reinhardt solos note for note-which took me several years-Now I try to take the technique I gained into creating my own music!"

In his acoustic project, Luke Hendon cooks up a gumbo of old and new. He playfully mixes modern influences and traditional gypsy jazz with virtuosity and style. In other arenas Luke has worked professionally as a composer, a session musician and guitarist in many different styles of music.

"This a must have for those with the heart of a gypsy." -George Harris, Jazz Weekly

"Hendon’s take on the style is to inject some very modern energy along with judiciously placed non-jazz undertones. That’s the crucial difference between maintaining and enriching a legacy." -Mark Keresman, New York City Jazz Record

"Django's music always brings a smile to the lips and transports one back 1930s France, and the best compliment here is that Hendon's music does the same, but also with a foot planted firmly in the here and now in this too short, extremely well done recording."  -Budd Kopman,  All About Jazz

Luke will be joined at The Packing House by JACK SOREF. Jack became captivated by the music of Django Reinhardt after attending the International Django Reinhardt festival in Samois-sur-Seine France as a teen. Ever since, he has been studying and teaching Django's music, and performing all over the United States, and abroad playing concerts, pubs, Jazz clubs, and festivals.

In 2011, he spent half a year living in Paris France, to study and absorb the music of Django Reinhardt at its source. Jack got to jam with legendary musicians like Boulou Ferré, and Florin Niculescu, as well as the young phenom's then storming the Paris scene.

Jack has performed as an accompanist for Jazz Manouche luminaries such as Joscho Stephan, Tim Kliphius, Gonzalo Bergara, Jason Anick, Olli Soikkeli, Adrien Moignard, Ben Powell, Richard Sheppard, Aurélien Bouly, and Titi Bamberger. He has been a perennial favorite at Wisconsin's Midwest Gypsy Swing Fest, and has been a guitar instructor at Django in June's week long Jazz Manouche music Camp in Northampton almost every year since 2009.

Special Note: On February 2nd 2018 , we were privileged to have Nicole Zuraitis join us in her debut performance at The Packing House. Nicole had just released her new album, ‘Hive Mind’ and shared original works from this project. She was accompanied by percussionist and composer Dan Pugach, guitarist Idan Morim, and bassist Alex Busby. These amazing musicians wowed our audience with their outstanding talent.

A yeaar later, she returned to perform “Generations of Her”, celebrating women songwriters and lyricists of the last 100 years. Much has happened in the twelve months in between... Nicole and Dan’s original arrangement of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ has resulted in a 2019 Grammy Nomination to their credit. In addition, Nicole’s frequent appearances at Birdland and residency at Greenwich Village’s 55 Bar has kept her quite busy.

COVID has kept her away UNTIL NOW! Nicole Zuraitis returns to The Packing House with a new Holiday themed show. Needless to say, we are humbled and honored to have Nicole Zuraitis grace our stage once again. Nicole's musical talent exceeds expectations... Her smooth vocals and jazz piano, combined with original composition and arrangement just leave you wanting more. This is one performance not to miss! - EC-CHAP

SPECIAL NOTE: EC-CHAP is excited to have Luke Hendon return to The Packing House stage this fall! Luke brings his own original qualities to the Gypsy Jazz tradition of Django Reinhardt.

Luke-5 (2).jpg

Jack Soref.jpg

Join us for an amazing evening of acoustic jazz originals by this outstanding musician!  This program is hosted by the "Eastern Connecticut Center for History, Art, and Performance" (EC-CHAP). Doors 7:00pm / Show 7:30pm. Tickets $20.00 Advance (Online) / $25.00 Door.

Bisantz_Nakhimovsky.jpg

June Bisantz & Alex Nakhimovsky have recorded, performed and toured together since 2005. This is their third recording project together and first writing collaboration. They share a background in classical music, a love of Latin rhythms and jazz harmonies, and a serious playfulness that has distinguished and energized their partnership.

Their new release LOVE'S TANGO, a collection of original latin/jazz songs features bossa novas, sambas, a Rachmaninoff-inspired string quartet prelude and one unique tango, from which the project gets its name. Also featured along with the many accomplished musicians on this recording, are renowned trombonist Steve Davis and smooth jazz guitarist Norman Johnson.

LOVE’S TANGO celebrates the many ways we experience love - romantically, exuberantly and philosophically - with the Latin rhythms, classical ideas and jazz improvisations that characterize all things Tango.

In the first month of its release, Love’s Tango has reached #6 on the NACC Latin Jazz Charts and #13 on the RMR Jazz Charts.

Most captivating of all is Bisantz, a gifted singer with a warm, bright voice and marvelous offhand timing. She navigates fast, complicated melodies with sensuous, feline ease. Her voice is a revelation - caressing and velvety, but electrically alive." ~ Eric Levin, People magazine

This recording revels in the joys of life...” - Susan Frances, Jazz 2 Love

Nakhimovsky’s arranging and writing skills, coupled with Bisantz well-crafted lyrics is inspired” ~ J. Pepper, All About Vocals

Love’s Tango” brings to mind warm climes, dancing and sophisticated people..” ~ Dodie Miller-Gould, Lemon Wire

Nicole Zuraitis 2017.jpg

Special Note: One year ago, on February 2nd 2018 to be exact, we were privileged to have Nicole Zuraitis join us in her debut performance at The Packing House. Nicole had just released her new album, ‘Hive Mind’ and shared original works from this project. She was accompanied by percussionist and composer Dan Pugach, guitarist Idan Morim, and bassist Alex Busby. These amazing musicians wowed our audience with their outstanding talent.

A year later, Nicole is back at The Packing House with a unique performance, “Generations of Her”, celebrating women songwriters and lyricists of the last 100 years. Much has happened in the last twelve months...

Needless to say, we are humbled and honored to have Nicole Zuraitis grace our stage once again. Nicole's musical talent exceeds expectations... Her smooth vocals and jazz piano, combined with original composition and arrangement just leave you wanting more. This is one performance not to miss! - EC-CHAP

SPECIAL NOTE: EC-CHAP is excited to debut the jazz and spirit of local artist and educator June Bisantz! June will present the last performance of the "Chet Baker Project" at The Packing House!

JuneBisantzCoverPhoto-REV.jpg

Musician and visual artist JUNE BISANTZ has co-written and produced several collections of vocal jazz, all of which have received national attention. She has performed and recorded with a number of distinguished jazz musicians including Steve Swallow, Bob Moses, Lew Soloff, Jerry Neiwood, Mike Stern, Valery Ponomarev. Palu Brown and Will Lee. Bisantz' music has also been celebrated in People Magazine, USA Today, Downbeat Magazine, Jazziz Magazine, and many others.

The artist's 2006 release, "Let's Fall in Love", inspired by the legendary Chet Baker, led to appearances at concerts and festivals including the Hartford International Jazz Festival, New England's renowned Litchfield Jazz Festival and a tour of Japan in 2012.

Bisantz returned to Japan in 2016 with "It's Always You", Volume 2 of the Chet Baker Project. This CD sets a 1960's jazz club mood, with familiar and obsucre Baker tunes delivered in a style that is "cool and still full of emotion - just like Chet Baker." -Hans Kittlaus, Jazz Podium Magazine, Germany

"Most captivating of all is Bisantz, a gifted singer with a warm, bright, intensely vibrant voice and marvelous offhand timing.  She navigates fast complicated melodies with sensuous feline ease. Her voice is a revelation, caressing and velvety, but electrically alive." -Eric Levin, People Magazine

To say this is good is like saying that Ella Fitzgerald is just an OK singer. June has a voice only God gives a very few. Move over Ella, Sarah and Diana, a new voice has emerged.” -Barry Rosen, WHCJ FM, Georgia

After two successful CDs and three wonderful tours of Japan, June Bisantz and world-class musicians Alex Nakhimovsky, piano and Norman Johnson, guitar, will present the Chet Baker Project’s last performance at The Packing House.

June promises a taste of things to come as she says goodbye to Chet, with a sneak preview of her new project Love’s Tango

SPECIAL NOTE: EC-CHAP is honored to have Luke Hendon grace the stage at The Packing House to kick-off our Jazz Series this fall! Luke brings his own original qualities to the Gypsy Jazz tradition of Django Reinhardt.

Luke-5 (2).jpg

LUKE HENDON has had success in the world of Django music, performing with top players from around the world. A Veteran guitarist, Luke has had many successes in his career. He has opened for legendary acts such as Al Green, Sun Ra, and Los Lobos, performed on Broadway, composed and recorded for television and film, worked with dance ensembles, cruise ships, theatre companies, and many, many bands.

Luke is among the notable guitar staff/artist instructors at the acclaimed Django in June Gypsy Jazz event held at Smith College, North Hampton, MA.

In his latest project, Silk & Steel, Luke Hendon draws from the tradition of the legendary gypsy guitar of Django Reinhardt and comes out swinging, soulful, funky, fresh, and innovative with his own project. In this stripped down acoustic setting, Luke's guitar takes center stage.   "I sort of got obsessed with learning a bunch of Django Reinhardt solos note for note-which took me several years-Now I try to take the technique I gained into creating my own music!"

Luke will be joined by Frank Brocklehurst (Bass), Preston Parish (Guitar), John Florio (Guitar), and Cedric Mayfield (Clarinet & Saxaphone). Please see more about these outstanding musicians below.

Based in Hartford, and recently named “Best Folk Band” in CTNow’s Best of Hartford Reader’s Poll for 2017,  Gracie Day is gaining a reputation for her authentic performances and heartfelt storytelling which is highlighted by melodic sensibility and dynamic sound.

The genre “Folk”, though a large influence on Day’s lyric writing, doesn’t quite describe the mixture of rock, soul and country her band has. Her debut E.P released in November 2017, and another record is anticipated for 2018.

Gracie will be performing at the Packing House with her talented guitar player, Lee Sylvestre who adds beautiful musical dynamics and harmonies.
