Special Note: We are honored to have Cheryl Wheeler and Kenny White share The Packing House stage this spring! Both of these legendary artists have long been favorites of the EC-CHAP family. Cheryl has shared her talents on stage since she was 12 years old, captivating audiences with her outstanding vocals and honest lyrics. Similarly, Kenny has a long list of accomplishments as a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist since the 1970’s. You can often see these two artists performing together live in concert. As Forrest Gump would say, “"Me and Jenny goes together like peas and carrots." You could say the same of Cheryl and Kenny – they just complement each other. This is a show not to miss!

CHERYL WHEELER has to be seen to be appreciated. Nothing you read and nothing you hear from her albums prepares you for how good a performer she is.

You may not be familiar with Cheryl, but you have probably heard her music. She is very respected as a songwriter by her peers, which can be seen by how many of them record her songs. Chery's songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Dan Seals, Peter Paul and Mary, Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, Suzy Boggus, Melanie, Bette Midler, Maura O'Connell, Sylvia, Kathy Mattea, and Holly Near. If they think she is great, then you owe it to yourself to learn more if you aren't familiar with her.

From her albums you can tell that she is a gifted songwriter with a beautiful voice. From other people's comments about her you can learn that she is a natural story teller with a fantastic sense of humor. But until you see her in person, you never really believe what you've been told about her. Besides, almost half of the songs she does during her shows haven't been recorded!

Cheryl's first concert was to a captive audience. She found an old toy ukulele in a neighbor's attic and serenaded her mother who was taking a bath at the time. A year later she got a real ukulele, then finally got her first guitar. She learned guitar from a neighbor, who also taught a group of boys. Each week they would get together and play just about any song they could think of for hours on end. Her first public performance was at a Hootenany type show when she was 12. She started writing songs when she was 17.

In 1983, Cheryl released a self produced EP called Newport Songs. Her first two albums Cheryl Wheeler in 1986, and Half a Book in 1991 were on an independent label, North Star. That company also released a promo tape called Live and Otherwise in 1987. This was a bonus tape that was sent to anyone who filled out a survey form that was included in a number of the North Star albums.

These were followed by numerous recordings and in 2012, Cheryl finally released a live album Cheryl Wheeler Live at the Triple Door, featuring Kenny White. If you have seen these two in concert, you know how great this album is. The album has the complete concert, including the stories and patter between songs. If she doesn't perform in your area very often, here is a great chance to enjoy one of her shows.

KENNY WHITE comes to the world of the touring singer-songwriter following a long and successful musical journey.

An accomplished pianist, who also performs on guitar, Kenny has now become more known for his clever lyrics. LONG LIST OF PRIORS, his aptly named current album, is the latest collection of original songs: snapshots of the human condition. Audiences often comment that a Kenny White concert moves them to laughter and tears — sometimes within the same song! Kenny recently completed an 18-month tour performing his original songs while traveling as the opener for Stephen Stills & Judy Collins, and has toured for many years with Cheryl Wheeler. He is looking forward to returning to the road to perform his own full-length shows.

Born in New York City and raised across the river in Fort Lee, NJ, Kenny White began his career in the 1970s, touring exclusively as the keyboard player for Jonathan Edwards and later with Livingston Taylor, on Linda Ronstadt’s legendary, “Living in the USA” tour.

He became a fixture in the NYC studio scene throughout the 1980s and 1990s, producing and arranging hundreds of commercials for TV and radio, beginning with “The Unsinkable Taste of Cheerios,” nearly seven years of Chevrolet’s “Heartbeat of America” campaign, countless ads for Coca Cola and many others.

Commercial work enabled White to direct artists as renowned and varied as Linda Ronstadt, Gladys Knight, Mavis Staples, Ricky Skaggs, and Aaron Neville. White contributed to film soundtracks as writer/musician including Message in a Bottle, Where the Heart Is and four films by Indie-director laureate, John Sayles. Kenny also appears on dozens of recordings of other musicians, including Marc Cohn’s platinum debut.

Join us for a very special evening of original music and stories by these legendary artists! This program is hosted by the "Eastern Connecticut Center for History, Art, and Performance" (EC-CHAP). Doors 6:30pm / Show 7:30pm. Tickets $35.00 Advance (Online) / $40.00 Door.

SPECIAL NOTE: EC-CHAP Talent Showcase represents a platform for anyone of any age to share their talent before a live audience. We are much more than an “Open Mic”- as we encourage talent sharing across any genre; and provide the time and opportunity to do so.

We respect and support the talent of ALL participants. Over the past year, we identified three individuals that have demonstrated a talent for writing original lyrics and musicianship and wish to highlight their talent trough this new event.

We invite you to join us for the debut of the “Talent Showcase All Stars” for EC-CHAP’s 2023-2024 performance Season!

Meet The All Stars!

Finn Rowan, Tom Turci & John Clark

Since 2017 EC-CHAP has offered a monthly Talent Showcase, settling in on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Over the past eight (8) years, we have enjoyed a lot of folks sharing a lot of talent! From original music - to visual arts; from comedy - to movement; and from spoken word - to hula-hoop artists, we have been fortunate to offer a platform for individuals and groups to share their passion for creative expression.

During the pandemic, we were able to keep the fire burning for over a year through a “Virtual” Talent Showcase model. Folks would submit their work as a video clip, and we compiled their work and streamed a “live” monthly session publicly on our YouTube channel. We are grateful and appreciate all those that contributed and continued to support this offering through the years!

FINN ROWAN

Finn Rowan is an indie folk singer/songwriter born and raised in CT. After learning to play guitar in high school, he quickly found his creative outlet in writing and have been using it ever since. In forever growing passion and love for music, he is working towards the creation of his first album. Until then you can follow his journey and listen to his sound on Facebook and Instagram @TheFinnRowan.

TOM TURCI

Tom Turci is a central Connecticut guitarist, singer and songsmith. His musical roots stem from bluegrass, blues, folk, rock and country. His original music echoes sounds from the 70's and earlier. Fingerstyle picking, downhome strumming, harmonicas singing and a voice all his own to give it life. Tom writes and performs solo around Connecticut. He also frequently performs with local Southington band "Shed Rats", and with musician Nathaniel Hintz. His mission is to bring community and authenticity back to music, providing the best and most genuine sound possible to his own music and performance. You can find out more about Tom's music on his website tomturci.com

JOHN CLARK

John Clark has been a part of the local music scene in eastern Connecticut since he moved here from Florida at age seventeen. He has contributed vocals and rhythm guitar to several duos and various bands, including collaborations with his brother Marty Clark, as well as Nashville recording artist Sarah Lou Richards. All the while, he has been crafting a small trove of personal original songs composed of the various radical musings and eccentric observations of an unschooled creative and social dreamer. John gives voice to the inner workings of his heart and soul, and the excited anticipation of whatever comes next.

We invite you to join us for the “Talent Showcase Senior All Stars” for EC-CHAP’s 2016-2024 performance Seasons!

Meet The Senior All Stars!

Curtis Brand, Rich DeBrito, and Dean Bolt

CURTIS BRAND

The music of CURTIS BRAND starts with the words. In the tradition of singer songwriters like Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, and Willie Nelson, Curtis playfully jabs the listener with the existential absurdity of our everyday life. He tells tales of the human condition--the lost souls, the wounded veteran, the let down lover--and blends them with delightful ditties and love songs in a performance which not only touches the sensibilities but also lifts the spirit.

From Older than Dirt, a tongue in cheek celebration of the aging process which is the title song from his first album, to Dust on the Water, which memorializes the World Trade Center tragedy, Curtis' songs pull the listener across the full range of human emotions. Whether performing solo in coffee shops and house concerts or joining with the On Call Band in full concert shows, the songs of Curtis Brand reach out and speak of the people around us.

RICH DEBRITO

RICH DEBRITO came late to singing and performing. He liked and was inspired by the music he heard on the radio by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and TV and motion picture themes, like: Henry Mancini – “Peter Gunn” ,“Moon River”, “Charade” and Burt Bacharach “Alfie”, “The Look of Love”, etc.

Rich claims he used to sing along with the radio (and still does sometime). When he was about 25 he was introduced to the guitar, and though he didn't take formal lessons, he was able to hold his own. He learned from friends who showed him chords to pop songs along with strums and finger picking styles.

He started playing at open mics back in the 70’s though not that often. In the mid 90’s Rich began to play regularly at open mics and would seek them out over a 30 mile radius. Through the open mics he got to hear and sometimes know people who love to sing. The rest is history... Rich loves to sing and learn songs - and once in a while he'll create a song.

DEAN BOLT

DEAN BOLT is a singer songwriter who grew up in Willimantic CT surrounded by local garage bands, Shaboo bands and other great musicians who went on to successful music careers. He wasn’t one of them. Many years later he found his way to acoustic guitar finger picking style and it clicked. His influences ranged from Leo Kotke, Doc Watson and Bonnie Raitt to James Taylor. There have been plenty of new and old influences. With songs spanning from the 1970’s to last week, it is likely he has written and will be singing about something that connects with your experience. From poignant to thought provoking to off beat, he has written for weddings, funerals, graduations and parties. He explores subjects from crop circles to suicide and, of course, love: good and bad.

He has played at The Sounding Board, Heartstone Winery, The Packing House and many other venues. Give him a listen at a show or download a song from Bandcamp. Enjoy the ride!

They were invited to be our opening band for a major 2019 Benefit concert with Tom Rush and Matt Nakoa at The Packing House, and remain in a special place in our evolving history.

NINA ROMANENKO

NINA ROMANENKO is a CT singer, songwriter and guitarist who loves working with and performing for people of all ages. She performs original and standard tunes with her own take on old-timey jazz, country blues, folk and rockabilly. Shows are great fun and filled with connection, humor, meaning and conscience.

“Open These Doors” - By Nina Romanenko & Kent Aldrich (C) 2020

"This song was written as an Anthem for Residents and their Families - who were seeking safe and meaningful visitation with their Loved Ones in Nursing Homes, Healthcare and Assisted Living Facilities - where they had been Isolated and confined beginning March 10, 2020. The lock down was meant to protect them from COVID 19 during the Pandemic but many died of Covid anyway - and then began suffering and dying from the effects of the Isolation as well."

Nina provides therapeutic music programs at Healthcare Facilities to bring smiles, laughter, peace and comfort. She also performs at cultural events and venues - including the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, Groton Sub Base, Cheney Hall and the famous Matt Malloy's pub in Ireland. She was a member of John Beardsley's Elvis Experience, which opened for Danny & the Juniors and for The Drifters - and she has opened solo for Tom Rush and Jeffrey Gaines.

During the pandemic she took part in the Virtual Talent Showcases that were graciously hosted by EC-CHAP - and collaborated virtually with musicians, Kevin Gallagher and Tom Caraher to produce several music videos - most with important social messages.

Nina is excited to be performing at The Packing House and share the stage with Horizon Blue! She performs from 7:30 to 8:30 and will be accompanied by performing/recording artist, Brian Macdonald - with his unique, dynamic guitar style.” Monique Hill will join in on a few with her lovely harmonies, as well.

HORIZON BLUE

HORIZON BLUE captures the essence of California folk/country music and the singer songwriter. Their music is a harmonic eclectic blend with lush, acoustic arrangements. Horizon Blue’s sound features a variety of unique instruments including: lap steel guitar, resophonic guitar, mountain dulcimer, banjo, McNally “Strum Stick” and handcrafted Connecticut made Ovation guitars.

Horizon Blue features the songs of award winning, international singer/songwriter Monique Hill. The songs are heartfelt, melodic, thoughtful, sincere and tell stories of everyday life. Monique’s voice is described by fans as the voice of an angel, sparkling and pure as a bird in flight.

The band shares a genuine friendship and their performances are nothing short of inviting and captivating. There is no doubt that once seen, this band makes a lasting impression.

Horizon Blue is well received by audiences of all ages and has performed at a variety of venues and events, including: the Mark Twain House, Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, New Britain Museum of American Art, Wadsworth Athenium, Connecticut Historical Society, Hicks Stern Museum, Windsor Art Center, Cultural Commission of Somers, Marlborough Art Center, Arts of Tolland, The Buttonwood Tree Performing Arts Center, Milford Arts Council, and opened for Tom Rush at The Packing House.

Special Note: It is a privilege to have Chris Smither grace The Packing House stage! Mr. Smither has been a long-time favorite of the EC-CHAP family and pre-pandemic efforts to schedule him with us have become a reality! Join us for this legendary folk artist – A show not to miss!

Listen to Chris Smither interviewed by Mark Ramone, Host of “Something Different”, WECS RAdio 90.1FM. January 8, 2024.

Having distilled his own signature sound of blues and folk for over 50 years, CHRIS SMITHER is truly an American original. A profound songwriter, Chris continues to draw deeply from the blues, American folk music, modem poets and philosophers.

From his early days as the New Orleans transplant in the Boston folk scene, through his wilderness years, to his reemergence in the 1990s as one of America's most distinctive acoustic performers, Chris Smither continues to hone his distinctive sound. He has always traveled his own road and stayed true to his musical vision.

He may be best known for writing "Love You Like A Man" which Bonnie Raitt and, more recently, jazz great Diana Krall have covered. His music has been covered by numerous artists and featured in soundtrack albums, independent film, television, and commercials. Reviewers continue to praise his dazzling guitar work, gravelly voice and songwriting. The New York Times: " With a weary, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate finger-picking style, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate."

More From the Levee (2020 Signature Sounds) is a masterwork and companion release to the celebrated double-CD 50-year career retrospective Still On the Levee that came out in 2014. It sports the unmistakable guitar sound Chris has made his own meshed with spare, brilliant songs, delivered in a bone-wise, hard-won voice.

ASSOCIATED PRESS: Smither is an American original, a product of the musical melting pot, and one of the absolute best singer-songwriters in the world.

ROLLING STONE: Bathed in the flickering glow of passing headlights and neon bar signs, Smither's roots are as blue as they come. There is plenty of misty Louisiana and Lightnin' Hopkins in Smither's weathered singing and unhurried picking. So fine.

NEW YORK TIMES: With a weary, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate finger-picking style, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate.

PROGRAM CHANGE NOTE: Unfortunately Kala Farnham, 2022 as CT State Troubadour, is unable to join Jenna Nicholls for this performance due to illness. A solo show will be rescheduled with Kala Farham in the near future.

NYC based singer/songwriter Jenna Nicholls, will retun to The Packing House stage. Jenna blew us away with her unique style and fresh lyrics! We are fortunate to have the opportunity to have Jenna join us once again. Jenna will now be joined by local musician John Clark who will open the show. This is an acoustic performance not to miss!

The music of JENNA NICHOLLS has been turning heads since she arrived on the door step of the Lower East Side of NYC.

Whether she’s crooning a jazz standard, belting out a New Orleans style dirge or plucking her 1920’s style original ballads on her Ukulele, she’s giving a vintage genre a new spin with her own lush nostalgic style and melodic sensibility.

Recently, Jenna has toured with Ingrid Michaelson, shared the stage with Oscar Winner Glen Hansard, Amanda Palmer, Lucius, Joan as Policewoman, Gerry Leonard (Spooky Ghost/David Bowie). She’s performed in venues all over the world including the Beacon Theater NYC, and Carnegie Hall.

Home.” is a heart-wrencher, as she leaves behind all her vocal acrobatics. Frankly, this song doesn’t need them. Nicholls is a genius storyteller through her vocal inflections. This subdue ballad is reminiscent of Norah Jones but is distinctly Nicholls.

Jenna will be joined by local musical artist John Clark.

JOHN ANTON CLARK has been a part of the local music scene in eastern Connecticut since he moved here from Florida at age seventeen.

John Clark originally came to The Packing House to participate in our monthly Talent Showcase, where his vocals and songwriting impressed us all! He will be joining two other regional musicians at The Packing House on May 4, 2024 as the “2023-24 Talent Showcase All Stars”. Tickets on sale soon.

SPECIAL NOTE: Tune in for two upcoming radio interviews with Twice Around this week!

Very Special Note: Acoustic Duo, “Twice Around” opened our Performance Season in September 2019. Then COVID-19 came on the scene to close The Packing House from March 2020 to September 2021. Once again, “Twice Around” opened our “Reopening” Season in September 2021, and again last Season in 2022.

Well… They’re back! EC-CHAP is pleased to present this warm and seasoned acoustic duo: “Twice Around”!

TWICE AROUND is an acoustic duo equipped with a couple of guitars, their voices and a grand love of music. Their self-crafted songs tell stories of the heart (sometimes broken, sometimes full) and walking your own path. Longtime friends Frank Veres and Luisa Tanno have been making music together since 1996. They started in a 10-piece Funk band, then in a harmonious trio that eventually became a duo. Much of their music-making has been in Frank’s basement recording studio where they tinker and play to their heart’s content revealing their efforts onstage and in three full length CDs of original music.

Photos taken during the recording of Twice Around's CD "Here Before"! www.twice-around.net Music: Pick Me Up by Twice Around Copyright 2017

They may be considered a modern, yet semi-throwback duo with a sound that could be classified as singer/songwriter with an essence of Pop and Melancholy. The foundation of their music is acoustic guitar and vocals; often with harmonies and guitar interplay, sometimes just one guitar and one voice, raw and rich. Their latest CD "Here Before" features 12 original songs that explore the ups and downs of all matters of the heart with an optimistic perspective. We’ve all been “Here Before”. They play original music along with a selection of familiar and unexpected covers.

Over the decades they have gone through cycles of performing every weekend and cycles of performing a few times a year, but never have they been away from audiences, and each other, for this long. Like all of us, they’ve missed the singular connection that happens when sharing the experience of live music, especially in true listening spaces such as The Packing House. An evening with them includes original music, stories in between songs and a real affection for their audience. You can get a preview of their music by visiting the listening page of their website: https://twice-around.net/home

Special Note: We are pleased to welcome Amy Rigby to The Packing House stage. We attempted to schedule her performance prior to the COVID 19 Pandemic, but as things go, we had to pause... Consider Amy’s debut performance as a fine wine… certainly worth the wait!

A teenage denizen of CBGB who fell in love with country songwriting, AMY RIGBY is best known for her album Diary Of A Mod Housewife. She started bands Last Roundup and the Shams in NYC’s East Village before launching a solo career. From a Nashville publishing deal to Little Steven’s Underground Garage Coolest Song (“Dancing With Joey Ramone”) to guest on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, World Cafe and Mountain Stage, Amy Rigby has never outgrown her manifesto from that 1996 debut: “She still wants to rock, and still knows how. She understands compromise, but she’s not…ready…to…give in…yet.”

Amy tackles themes often associated with country and folk— getting by; getting older— from an ardent rock music fan’s perspective. Her passion for punk, psychedelia, garage and good old songcraft spill out on record and across the stage.

A longtime online diarist and podcaster, Rigby has contributed writing to the Village Voice, Talkhouse and Slate. Her first book, Girl To City: A Memoir was published in 2019. She lives, writes and records in Catskill, New York with her husband and sometime bandmate Wreckless Eric and tours regularly in the US and UK.

“Singer-songwriter…doesn’t fully describe Rigby’s immense gifts and her devotion to the kind of pop and rock music that singer-songwriters often neglect." — Nashville Scene

“Her whimsical, often autobiographical songs are masterful. Funny and enticing, she is up there with the likes of Paul Simon and Randy Newman.” — New York Times

“Rigby combines formidable aural craftsmanship with blunt, self-deprecating honesty.” — Village Voice

SPECIAL NOTE: We are excited to have Kala Farnham return to The Packing House this season after a long COVID Hiatus! Kala has graced our stage annually since 2017, and has brought with her an incredible instrumental talent and powerful lyrics. It was clear from the first time I heard her that she was a very special artist. With a long list of accolades and numerous awards to her name, she has achieved the State of Connecticut’s highest musical achievement in 2022 as CT State Troubadour, a title well deserved.

KALA FARNHAM is a multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter hailing from the Quiet Corner of CT. Kala's signature songwriting has been described as a reinvention of the folk tradition made popular by artists such as Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez.

She has been praised for her classical undertones and playful dose Broadway theatricality onstage, and a lyricism that springs to life with creative storytelling, cultural references, and rich metaphor. Her first full-length studio album, "Anahata: Wake Up Your Heart", was nominated for "Best Americana Album" in RI's Motif Music Awards alongside a nomination for "Best Female Americana Vocalist".

In 2015, she was selected to be an Official Showcase Artist in Folk Alliance International's SERFA Music Conference. October 2016 marked the release of her 2nd studio album, "Samadhi: Home Is Where You Are" as well as another Motif nomination for Best Americana Album. Kala is an alumni of the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project and the winner of the 2017 Rhode Island Songwriters Association Performing Songwriter Contest.

Kala Farnham.jpg

Kala’s signature songwriting has been likened to a reinvention of the traditional folk with influences of pop, Broadway, and world music. Her affinity for poetry and creative writing is evident through lyricism that springs to life with heartfelt and creative storytelling, cultural references, and rich metaphor. Her work has garnered numerous awards and media attention, including 2020 Falcon Ridge Festival Emerging Artist, 2019 Rose Garden Performing Songwriter Contest winner, 2019 Rocky Mountain Folks Fest honorable mention

Farnham's 2020 album, "Your Spirit Is a Work of Art", is composed of thirteen musical vignettes exploring the imperfect beauty of the human condition; it has been described by Nick Noble of The Folk Revival as “a work of poetic insight… worth listening to again and again."

She studies Music Performance and Composition while also pursing Human Services and Mental Health. Together, these interests drive her passion for the healing and transformative power of musical storytelling. Kala also serves as a certified Crisis Counselor, and works with an array of populations such as at-risk youth, those who suffer from mental illness, and survivors of trauma. She has taught, performed for, and worked with youth programs, students with learning disabilities, individuals recovering from addiction, and those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Kala is currently studying sound healing and Nada Yoga and plans to She incorporate elements of the practice into her work.

As the new Connecticut State Troubadour, Kala plans to apply her foundations and strong background in music performance and human service in this honorary role to foster healing and community connection through music.

Kala will be joined by NYC based singer/songwriter Jenna Nicholls.

KATE TAYLOR

“Fifty years ago, James Taylor’s sister released her debut album, then promptly vanished from the scene. Now, decades after she traded rock stardom for life in a teepee, Kate Taylor is back.” —Rolling Stone

Kate Taylor, of the renowned Martha’s Vineyard via North Carolina musical clan that includes brothers James, Livingston, Alex and Hugh, is returning from a long hiatus with a new studio album, WHY WAIT!, which reunites her with many of the key players, including renowned session musicians Russ Kunkel, Danny Kortchmar, and Leland Skar, who backed her on her 1971 debut, SISTER KATE. Produced by music veteran Peter Asher, who was at the helm for the SISTER KATE sessions, the album marks the 50th anniversary of Kate’s foray into the music biz. The album was released in the summer of 2021 on Compass Records.

As on SISTER KATE, she covers some of her favorite songwriters and songs, including a version of her brother James’ “I Will Follow,” The Beatles’ “Good Day Sunshine” and Taj Mahal’s “He Caught the Katy,” the album’s lead-off single. Kate, who always had more of an R&B sound than her folk-leaning brothers James and Livingston, contributes two songs: the upbeat title track and “I Got a Message.” She also does a version of Little Feat’s “Long Distance Love” and the 1963 girl group hit by The Exciters, “Tell Him.”

If you haven’t heard much from Kate in the last half century, it’s because she gave up the rock life nearly as quickly as she started it, moving to Martha’s Vineyard where she married and raised her two children. They spent summers living in a tepee, later made jewelry from quahog shells and dug for scallops to earn a living, and lived a life out of the public eye.

The spark for this album was ignited at Kate’s 70th birthday party when her agent (who also manages Asher), brought up the fact that the key players who appeared on Sister Kate are still around and very active (most recently as members of The Immediate Family). Asher liked the idea and Kate was instantly on board, writing the title track and assembling a group of songs complemented by her bluesy, lived-in voice.

James Taylor told Rolling Stone: “For Kate to be doing this with Peter, and that both of them have this life experience that brings them back together, it’s really a moving thing. I think it’s so great that Kate will have this next iteration, you know, this next chance for people to hear her and pick up on her.”

ASH & ERIC have never shied away from life’s hard edges. The married couple’s new album “Sure” (May 2022) is “a tale of love… [with] some heartaches and a pinch of disputation along the way” (Americana UK). Hailing from the gritty heart of New England (Worcester, MA), the two find consolation in discovering beauty in the challenges of life.

Their musings reflect the hope and pain we all experience, sung in voices as vulnerable and honest as their lyrics. Their songs feel like a warm welcome, a shoulder to lean on and a hand to hold at the end of a long day. No Depression says their writing will leave listeners “...coming away from many of these [songs] cleansed,”. Their warm harmonies, swirling acoustic guitars, and easy stage presence have earned them a dedicated following in the emerging US folk scene, performing with folk legends like Livingston Taylor, Mark Erelli and Vance Gilbert.

Their independent 9-song release, “Sure”, was recorded, mixed and produced by Eric at a boarding school in Western Massachusetts, and will be accompanied by a feature-length film, releasing fall 2022.

Please join us for an evening of original works from this acoustic duo. This program is hosted by the "Eastern Connecticut Center for History, Art, and Performance" (EC-CHAP). Doors 7:00pm / Show 7:30pm. Tickets $20.00 Advance (Online) / $25.00 Door.

Soft drinks and snacks available. We are pleased to offer our exclusive "BYOB&F" TM model - Bring Your Own Beverage & Food (Wine & Beer Only - I.D. November 3, 2022 will certainly be a Special Evening at The Packing House! Folk Legend and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tom Paxton will grace our stage with his song, humor, and wit. Tom will be joined by Acoustic Duo and Grammy winning artists, the “DonJuans”. This is a show not to miss!

TOM PAXTON as become a voice of his generation, addressing issues of injustice and inhumanity, laying bare the absurdities of modern culture and celebrating the tenderest bonds of family, friends, and community.

In describing Tom Paxton’s influence on his fellow musicians, Pete Seeger has said: “Tom’s songs have a way of sneaking up on you. You find yourself humming them, whistling them, and singing a verse to a friend. Like the songs of Woody Guthrie, they’re becoming part of America.” Pete goes on: “In a small village near Calcutta, in 1998, a villager who could not speak English sang me What Did You Learn In School Today? in Bengali! Tom Paxton’s songs are reaching around the world more than he is, or any of us could have realized. Keep on, Tom!”

Guy Clark adds: “Thirty years ago Tom Paxton taught a generation of traditional folksingers that it was noble to write your own songs, and, like a good guitar, he just gets better with age.” Paxton has been an integral part of the songwriting and folk music community since the early 60’s Greenwich Village scene, and continues to be a primary influence on today’s “New Folk” performers. The Chicago native came to New York via Oklahoma, which he considers to be his home state. His family moved there in 1948, when Tom was 10 years old, and he graduated from Bristow High School and The University of Oklahoma, where he majored in drama while his interest in folk music grew and eventually predominated.

Brought to New York courtesy of the US Army, Tom remained there following his discharge. His early success in Greenwich Village coffeehouses, such as The Gaslight and The Bitter End, led to an ever increasing circle of work. Then in 1965 he made his first tour of the United Kingdom — the beginning of a still-thriving professional relationship that has included at least one tour in each of the succeeding years.

He has performed thousands of concerts around the world in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Scandinavia, France, Italy, Belgium, Holland, England, Scotland, Ireland and Canada. That these fans still enjoy his work is a testament to the quality of his recent work, and to the enduring power of modern standards like The Last Thing On My Mind, Ramblin’ Boy, Bottle Of Wine, Whose Garden Was This?, Goin’ To The Zoo and The Marvelous Toy. Paxton’s songbooks, critically acclaimed children’s books (available from HarperCollins – see the page for children), award-winning children’s recordings, and a catalog of hundreds of songs (also recorded by many renowned artists including Willie Nelson, Placido Domingo, Paul Simon, Townes Van Zandt and Tiny Tim), all serve to document Tom Paxton’s 40-year career.

Tom received a 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy during the 51st Annual GRAMMY® Awards. He was nominated for a GRAMMY for Comedians and Angels in 2007, and Live in the U.K. in 2006. He was also nominated for GRAMMYS in 2003 for his Appleseed Records CD, Looking For The Moon, and in 2002 for his children’s CD, Your Shoes, My Shoes. He has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from ASCAP, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC in London.

Tom Paxton’s place in folk music is secured not just by hit records and awards, but by the admiration of three generations of fellow musicians. An internationally recognized and loved cultural figure, he has always chosen goodwill over commercial success. His generosity has taken the shape of a benefit concert performance for a little girl fighting leukemia, or a personal note of encouragement to an up-and-coming songwriter. This is the man who wrote and lives the words, “Peace will come, and let it begin with me.”

He is one of the great songwriters of the last century and will be reckoned as one of the greats in this new century, as well. He is a man we have come to regard as our friend.

"The Marvelous Toy" is a popular classic from singer-songwriter Tom Paxton, and it has been performed by many artists. On August 3, 2012, Tom performed it with his grandson, Sean Silvia, at Mason District Park in Annandale, Virginia. Accompanying Tom and Sean on mandolin is Greg Trafidlo.

THE DONJUANS will join Tom Paxton to make this memorable evening one to never forget!

By their name you might assume that the DonJuans rely merely on their good looks. However, you will be impressed to know that the group includes two GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriters, Don Henry and Jon Vezner. Their song, “Where’ve You Been” (recorded by Kathy Mattea) was the first song in country music history to sweep all major song of the year honors including the GRAMMY®, ACM®, CMA, and the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International (NSAI) awards.

In the nearly 25 years since “Where’ve You Been,” Don and Jon have performed in venues from the Bottom Line in New York City to the Bluebird Café in Nashville, sharing stages with artists as diverse as Joey Ramone, John Hartford, Michael Johnson, and David Crosby. Their songs have been recorded by a multitude of artists including Janis Ian, Ray Charles, John Mellencamp, and Miranda Lambert to name a few. Working as a duo, the DonJuans bring an impressive array of songs, experience, and gifted musicianship.

Collectively, songs by Tom Paxton and the Don Juans have been covered by: Harry Belafonte, John Mellencamp, Miranda Lambert, Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, Nancy Griffith, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Janis Ian, Kathy Mattea, John Denver, Faith Hill, B.J. Thomas, Blake Shelton, Peter, Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan… just to name a few! Within days of writing and playing together, they knew they were onto something. Now they’re taking it on the road!

Join us for a Special Evening with Folk Icon Tom Paxton and the DonJuans! This program is hosted by the "Eastern Connecticut Center for History, Art, and Performance" (EC-CHAP). Doors 7:00pm / Show 7:30pm. Tickets $35.00 in advance online / $40.00 at the door. 20% Discount at Door for EC-CHAP Members.

We’ve created a Tradition!

Acoustic Duo, “Twice Around” opened our Performance Season in September 2019. Then COVID-19 came on the scene to close The Packing House from March 2020 to September 2021. Once again, “Twice Around” opened our “Reopening” Season in September 2021.

Well… They’re back! Opening our third Consecutive Season September 2022! EC-CHAP is pleased to present: “Twice Around”!

Calendula has an interest in the history of folk music as it pertains to societal change and action for the betterment of communities, especially working class communities.

She began writing as Calendula in 2019, and released her first EP in 2020. Her newest single is called "No Going Back" and it is a commentary on the state of the world, inspired by the protest music of the 20th century, particularly Buffy Sainte-Marie and Phil Ochs.

Her nostalgia for past homes, daydreamed futures, and distant loved-ones fuels her folk inspired melodies. Her upcoming album, Loveletter, focuses on social class and climate justice in hopes of inspiring positive change in her community.

Abigail Golec is a sound artist, musician, and researcher currently based in Connecticut. She is an Artist-In-Residence at The Eastern Connecticut Center for History, Art, and Performance (EC-CHAP). She attained her MA in Music Studies from the University of Amsterdam, and her BFA in Technical Theatre & Design, concentrating in sound design, from the University of Connecticut.

Affectionately known as SOOP, Seat of Our Pants has propelled to the forefront of the Connecticut roots music scene with award winning, heartfelt, and clever songs that get you thinking about the world around you. A regular at The Packing House, with numerous appearances before the world shut down, they are thrilled to be coming back with new songs, and new instruments, including a debut of Carolyn’s latest project, her Dusty Strings folk harp.

Come and see for yourselves what all the buzz is about as Carolyn, Jeff, Mark, and Mike bring their music to The Packing House for the 4th year in a row. The distinct all-American tone of the Appalachian mountain dulcimer, the visual intrigue of the electric upright bass, the energetic beat of the cajon, the impeccable intricate harmonies, and the melodic play of the fiddle and guitar distinguish Connecticut’s one-of-a-kind SOOP. Their cornucopia of folk instruments and rock-infused songwriting are a contagiously fun experience.

The Band

Carolyn Brodginski starting singing and playing guitar at the tender age of 10. Since 2011, she has added other stringed instruments to her bag of tricks, including ukulele, mandolin, and the instrument dearest to her heart, the Mountain Dulcimer. In 2016 she completed a certification as a therapeutic musician, and now plays the dulcimer at the bedside for patients at St. Francis Hospital as part of the hospital’s Integrative Medicine department. She also teaches dulcimer workshops at the hospital, libraries, arts centers, and music festivals. https://carolynbrodginski.com/. Her original songs have been included on the companion CD of Dulcimer Player’s News, a quarterly publication for dulcimer enthusiasts around the globe.

Jeff Gorman has been around music his whole life starting with clarinet and saxophone. With the band he is on bass and harmonica. Jeff and Carolyn were married in 2010, prompting a neighbor to refer to them as the "Von Trapps", with their home full of music and musical instruments. Since retiring from a 30+ year career in IT this past Summer, Jeff has been focusing on music, and taking care of all of those projects around the house he never had time for when he was working. This makes Carolyn very happy.

Mark Hall has been drumming and singing in bands for more than 35 years. With SOOP he plays an acoustic drum called the Cajon, which he masterfully makes sounds like a full drum kit. Mark and Carolyn's similar singing backgrounds in acapella madrigals, results in a perfect blend as they trade off on lead and backing vocals. By day, Dr. Mark Hall is a Clinical Psychologist giving the songs he writes a deep and sometimes humorous take on the human condition (especially the songs that are self reflective). From June through October, he and his wife Robin can be found most weekends in Mystic on their boat in a slip at Mystic Marina.

Michael Frantzen joined the band in 2015, given them a lead voice that raised them to another level. A classically trained violin player, he never really played the “fiddle” before joining SOOP. Mike has the gift of being able to quickly play ANYTHING you sing or hum to him. This made it very easy to get him caught up on 3 years worth of music the band had been doing before he came along. Mike is an electrical engineer, lumberjack, woodworker, mechanic, and loves traveling and cruising down the Connecticut River on his boat with “The Fiddler’s Wife” Carola…..amazing he has time for music.

Gracie Day released her first EP in November of 2017 and quickly won attention for her songwriting, singing and performances, achieving "Best New Act" in 2017 and "Best in State for CT" in 2018 at the New England Music Awards, an organization that acknowledges musical acts throughout all six states. Also, in 2018, Day was a semi-finalist in the international Unsigned Only Songwriting Contest, and nominated in the prestigious Boston Music Awards.

Her song "Tennessee,” that gained tens of thousands of plays on Spotify and landed various radio placements. Recorded at the famous Sound Emporium, a legendary studio with a roster of everyone from Johnny Cash, REM, to Alabama Shakes, Gracie Day’s new EP “The Nashville Sessions” was released in June 2019 . Gracie is currently recording her first full-length album.

Before her recent move to Massachusetts, Gracie Day lived in the greater Hartford, Connecticut area where she first started performing music and establishing herself in the arts community. Her episode of the TV show “Amplify” on Connecticut’s PBS was nominated for an Emmy in the New England Chapter. Despite winning “Best Folk Band” in CTNow’s Best of Hartford Reader’s Poll in 2017, the genre “Folk” does not quite describe the mixture of rock and soul in her sound. Day cites her parents' music of the 60’s and 70’s having the largest initial influence on her love of music.

Opening for Gracie will be local singer/songwriter and EC-CHAP Artist-In-Residence, “Calendula” (Abigail Golec). You can see Calendula’s debut performance at The Packing House along with “Moon Basket” on March 19th.

After three years (almost to the day), CT based acoustic duo, Twice Around return to kick-off our Grand Reopening event at The Packing House! Luisa and Frank will be joined by local singer/songwriter Curtis Brand.

Twice Around-2.jpg

Twice Around-2.jpg

Over the decades they have gone through cycles of performing every weekend and cycles of performing a few times a year, but never have they been away from audiences, and each other, for this long. Like all of us, they’ve missed the singular connection that happens when sharing the experience of live music, especially in true listening spaces such as The Packing House. An evening with them includes original music, stories in between songs and a real affection for their audience. You can get a preview of their music by visiting the listening page of their website: https://twice-around.net/listen-buy.

Curtis Brand.jpg

CURTIS BRAND traces his musical roots back to the Weavers and Josh White, with more contemporary influences from Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, Kris Kristofferson and Willy Nelson. Curtis freely admits that the core of his music is the words. Curtis would say, “The words have a rhythm of their own”, and the creative task he undertakes is to tell a story in which the rhythm of the words and the rhythm of the music match. When you hear Curtis for the first time, you won’t recognize most of the songs. While he will occasionally do a cover of a song by Woody Guthrie or Willie Nelson, most of his performance songs are his own creations which explore the joys, challenges, and side effects of life. Curtis views his music as an extension of his life's work, helping people he meets by sharing the stories of real people and their time on the planet. “I think that’s what Woody was doing,” he says, “and that’s a pretty good example to follow.”

A review of his music by Susan Price Dziedzic noted “Spending an evening with singer/songwriter/storyteller Curtis Brand leaves one with that peaceful, easy feeling of a barefoot summer’s evening; of relaxing on the back porch in a pair of faded old jeans, favorite beverage in hand, surrounded by best friends. His music, his stories, and even the essence of the man himself, just put folks into a state of laid-back easiness.”

Special Note: We feel privileged too have Libby Johnson return to The Packing House! Libby’s heart felt lyrics, innate musicality , and humble demeanor create a unique connection with audiences everywhere. Please join us for this special evening of original works.

LIBBY JOHNSON is a singer/songwriter from New York City. Born in Germany while her parents were stationed there, Libby was raised in the U.S. until the age of 13, at which time her family moved to Nairobi, Kenya. A self-taught piano player, she learned to play guitar from her mother, who was a folk singer of contemporary and traditional folk and bluegrass. Her father played bagpipes. Johnson's first performance in public was at a Nairobi pub.

As an adult, she had returned to the United States, settling in New York City after studying at Berklee College of Music. Along with her sister Carrie, also a musician and songwriter, she formed the band 22 Brides, and earned a slot on the 1998 Lilith Fair tour. The duo’s music was a blend of folk/rock featuring the two voices harmonizing. The Brides released three albums on the Zero Hour label, and one for Universal. They signed with Chrysalis publishing in 1994 and spent the next four years touring until both sisters paused to start families.

Libby released her solo debut album ‘Annabella’ in 2006 on the Wrong Records label. The songs followed the thread of her writing with the Brides, with “haunting vocals over sly bluesy guitar tracks.”

Mike Joyce, “Washington Post” writes, “On Annabella Johnson quickly reveals her chief strengths: a hazy soprano that takes on a soulful edge when it counts, as evidenced by the album's title track; an engaging way with words”.

Libby Johnson featured on E! Entertainment News, originally airing on Oct 25, 2006. Segment is about musicians who write songs in movies. Also featuring Lyrics Born and Josh Groban.

After a preview of Annabella, writer-director Bart Freundlich decided to use four of her songs in his film Trust the Man, starring David Duchovny, Billy Crudup, Julianne Moore and Maggie Gyllenhaal. He said that he re-edited scenes around her songs. Johnson also wrote a new song, "Indelible Mark", which plays over the film's end credits. Johnson’s film credits also include work with The Discovery Channel, MTV, Oxygen, Smallville, The Riches, and many more.

Libby Johnson - Don't Mean You Lost Your Love (Trust the Man)

Libby’s follow-up album, “Perfect View,” was released in 2009, with several of the tracks picked up for international licensing. In his review of Perfect View, Mark Tucker, “Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange” (FAME) writes, “This is one beautiful CD.” Comparing Johnson as “a cross of Mary Fahl, Bonnie Raitt, and Janis Ian, a quietly engrossing woman crafting songs delicate and enfolding, works grounded in the everyday but gently transcendent… Libby Johnson feels everything she writes, plays, and sings, feels it genuinely, no exaggerations, no playing to the times and masses, not a shred of compromise.”

In recent years Libby has developed a voice and guitar studio practice in the New York area. She continues to write, record and perform live.

Recent Development!

We are pleased to announce that local Singer/Songwriter and EC-CHAP Artist/Performer Curtis brand will perform an opening set for Libby!

CURTIS BRAND’S music starts with the words. He tells tales of the human condition--the lost souls, the wounded veteran, the let down lover - and blends them with delightful ditties and love songs which not only touches the sensibilities but also lifts the spirit. From Older than Dirt, a celebration of the aging process (title song from his first album), to Dust on the Water, which memorializes the World Trade Center tragedy, Curtis' songs pull the listener across the full range of human emotions.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to see this outstanding NYC singer/songwriter and local folk artist together in our intimate historic setting. They're Back…

From the album "Rise Up." www.belleofthefall.com www.facebook.com/belleofthefall.com www.instagram.com/belleofthefall

BELLE OF THE FALL continues to demonstrate a thoughtful approach to song writing and performance. Their unique sound, sweet harmonies, and musicianship differentiates these artists from many.

As the first musical artists to perform at The Packing House in 2015, their image appears as a part of “A Canvas of History and Social Change”, EC-CHAP’s 200’ mural along RT-32 in Willington. Belle of the Fall will debut their new album, “The Bending of Light” with us on February 1st.

From the 2019 album the Bending of Light www.belleofthefall.com www.facebook.com/belleofthefall www.instagram.com/belleofthefall Lyrics: What if we're all headed to the same place Just none of us are getting there the same way What if all the lines began to blur And the colors fade What if all the violence turned to

Cast of Characters:

Tracy Walton- 2014 and 2015 New England Music Award nominee Best Male Performer. An accomplished bassist and songwriter who has written for Alfred Books and taught at the National Guitar Workshop. Tracy is a Taylor guitar artist.

Julia Autumn Ford- CT Music Award Nominee Best New Artist 2014 and Song of the Year 2015. Her debut solo album has gained her well deserved attention as a singer of rare talent. "It's almost freakish how good she sings. I watched her and it was hard to process that it was actually coming out of her mouth." Joe Michelini, River City Extension.

Weapons of choice:

Julia - The obvious choice for lead singer in any situation, acoustic guitar, yukitar, occasional melodica. Tracy- Upright bass, vocals, drums when back lined as he is not a fan of carrying things.

The Rise of Belle of the Fall:

In 2014 Tracy Walton produced Julia Autumn Ford's debut album at his studio On Deck Sound Studio. In essence the record is somewhat the birth of Belle of the Fall, as Tracy plays all of the instruments on the record and Julia sings. Later that year they would tour the East Coast together sharing bills playing separate solo sets, with Tracy sitting in on some of Julia's songs.

Sometimes an idea seems to simple so it takes a while for it to come to fruition. Simply put, two is often better than one. With Belle of the Fall it was as simple as an agreement of "All in." The summer of 2015 was the right time for two forces to collide. 2016 finds the duo going strong with their debut album, “Earthbound”  released on April 5th.

"Acoustic folk duo Belle Of The Fall has proven that musical soul mates do in fact exist.” Vents Magazine

Special Note: We are pleased to have folk artist Claudia Schmidt return to The Packing House! Her 2018 debut with us brought her CD Release of "Hark the Dark", a compilation of classic and original works portraying a reflection and texture of this special time of year. This year Claudia will be joined by Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards, a well established acoustic folk duo from south central Massachusetts who will tease us with new originals to soon be a part of their new CD release this spring. - EC CHAP

Claudia Schmidt has been weaving her musical magic for almost 50 years for audiences of thousands at festivals worldwide to living rooms of rapt listeners, and the response is overwhelming: "I feel like she was singing just to me", "she is a shaper of space and time", "I feel so refreshed and exuberant after seeing and hearing her live". .live performance is her natural habitat. With her multi-octave voice accompanied by 12 string guitar and her most unusual approach to the mountain dulcimer, she navigates mostly original music along with some gems from fellow songwriters to the American Songbook to the traditional treasure trove of songs.

Add the wonderful spoken word spilling forth here and there, and you have a musical and theatrical performance of the highest caliber. She has written award winning scores for theater, run a B&B and a restaurant, done theater, and she brings all this to the stage of the Packing House on Sat. Jan. 25th. A lifetime of wonder and musical exploration on a winter night in Willington.

Claudia will be joined by folk artists Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards.

2016duo2color8x10.jpg

Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards are clearly inheritors of a timeless legacy, creating music that is both original and evocative of a rich tradition. Blending distinctive voices and a wide range of accompaniment (guitar, harmonica, ukulele, clarinet, penny whistle, electric bass), their songs have been well-received by audiences around the eastern United States and Canada since 2010. Transcending the genre of folk Americana, their music echoes inspiration from traditional folk duos and singer/songwriters like Ian & Sylvia, Kate Wolf and Neil Young – combining beautiful harmonies and a lyrical intensity, while establishing a unique sound of their own.

Their latest release, Live in Manitoba (Nobody’s Favorite Records 2018), is a collection of songs and short introductions from a thirteen date house concert tour of Manitoba, Canada organized through Home Routes / Chemin Chez Nous. This album demonstrates Mark and Raianne’s close connection to their audience, as well as musical versatility. The track list includes selections from both studio albums, covers of Tom Petty’s Walls and Neil Young’s Unknown Legend, and two previously unreleased songs.

Join us for an opportunity to celebrate this collection of original folk music and experience these accomplished musicians in an historic intimate setting! SOOP.jpg

For more than 8 years, Seat Of Our Pants (SOOP) has been treating audiences throughout the state to their very own style of Americana, described as a “sweet soup of blended harmonies, uplifting lyrics and…fun vibe”, by Anne Marie Cannata McEwen, Director at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, Ct.

Since the show is scheduled smack in the middle of the holiday season, Carolyn, Jeff, Mark and Mike have a mix of seasonal selections planned for the evening as well.

Please join us for an evening of original works and Holiday Cheer by these talented artists!! This program is hosted by the "Eastern Connecticut Center for History, Art, and Performance" (EC-CHAP).
