Middle-aged, white history teacher Shannon and first-year, mixed-race history teacher James make a connection when the latter reluctantly plays Benjamin Franklin for Shannon’s annual “Ben Franklin Day” at Hilltop High. James uses the favor to urge Shannon to become an advocate for teaching a more pluralist version of American history. When they learn together about the radical 18th Century abolitionist Benjamin Lay, they begin to bond over revisiting lesser known revolutionaries of the past. When their state passes anti-critical race theory legislation, the TRUE Act, they cross over to being modern day radicals, staging a dramatic protest at the PA state house. Personal commitments challenge their momentum, forcing them both to decide how much they're willing to risk for their beliefs.
