Matt DeChamplain's Drummerless Trio: This trio was formed in honor of the great drummerless trios led by Nat "King" Cole, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Phineas Newborn, Ray Brown, Ahmad Jamal and Tal Farlow. The concert will feature arrangements of popular standards, rare jazz standards and original compositions by Matt DeChamplain.

The format of "Piano/Bass/Guitar" is very unique! The trio works hard to create the energy of a large ensemble with an intimate, acoustic group. The music is highly arranged reminiscent of the Oscar Peterson Trio and Nat "King" Cole Trio.

Matt DeChamplain (piano), Chris Morrison (guitar) and Matt Dwonszyk (bass) each add to the compelling musical fluidity and live energy of the group in a unique way. The group is known for their dexterous facility and creative improvisation and also the humility and humor they bring to the bandstand as they share the music they love.

What Others Are Saying:

“Matt DeChamplain is a pianist of extraordinary skills and musicality. I think I learned as much from Matt as he did from me! Matt graduated at the top of his class, and is well on his way to world-class musician status, with a lot to say. All we have to do is listen and enjoy.” –Andy Laverne

“Matt DeChamplain plays with amazing dexterity and superb taste while covering the history of jazz piano from ragtime and stride to modern.” –Hartford Jazz Society

“Matt DeChamplain is an amazing study in advanced piano styles with the ability to demonstrate a major contribution to the "Stride" style of many years of early jazz history and more recent jazz. Then, we approach the genius of Art Tatum and Matt is, as well as an innovator, a disciple of the "Tatum" school. Not many pianists have had that ability to combine both opposing styles, put them together, and also be a great current jazz artist. –Donn Trenner

“Matt’s insatiable thirst for knowledge and improvement combines with his innate pianistic talents to create a formidable artistic force in the world of jazz piano...He is a first-rate musician and his level of musicality is matched only by his high level of humanity and his desire to share what he loves, whether it be with audience, student or colleague. ” –Jeff Barnhartt

“His original, fluent, open-ended style can move about freely in all eras, seamlessly mixing the past with the present. ...he never loses sight of the central importance of the groove and playing with feeling.” –Owen McNally, NPR
