The Packing House Poetry Series (3rd Thursday of the month)

FREE ADMISSION

(DONATIONS GRACIOUSLY ACCEPTED)

Steve Veilleux

The April 18th show of The Packing House Poetry Series will feature Jefferson Singer, Susan Powers, and Diane Ayer.

The show’s format will consist of two open mic segments as well as a pair of 15-minute slots for each of the featured artists. Intermission will give audience and poet the chance to meet one another and the opportunity to purchase signed publications.

The open-mic segments will provide the opportunity for audience members to read their own original work. We are planning to allow for two half-hour sessions, one at the beginning of the event, and the other at the end. Readers will be given up to five minutes to present, and we will have a signup sheet.

FEATURED WRITERS

Jefferson Singer is the Faulk Foundation Professor of Psychology at Connecticut College in New London, CT. He studied creative writing at Amherst College and Harvard University, taking seminars with Seamus Heaney and Robert Fitzgerald while at Harvard. Some of his recent poems appeared in the Winter 2022 poetry issue of Sixfold. In addition to teaching and research in clinical and personality psychology, he has a private psychotherapy practice in West Hartford, CT. He is married, a father of two daughters, and grandfather of Miriam, almost two years old.

Susan Powers has been writing stories and poems since she was a small child, but she says that reading great poetry and literature is what gives her momentum. Susan’s home in Scotland, Connecticut is tucked away in the woods where she has the daily privilege of being immersed in nature.

She attained graduate degrees in English and psychology leading to her life’s work as a high school teacher and college professor. In the fall of November 2023, Susan Powers was chosen as Scotland, Connecticut’s first Poet Laureate, and she is fostering poetry projects with teachers at the local high school. You can find her poems in the Orenaug Mountain Journal (November 2023), Sixfold magazine (Summer 2021, Summer 2020, and Winter 2013), and in Tiferet  (2011).  The New London Librarium published Susan’s chapbook, Break the Spell (2010), and she is currently working on a new poetry collection.

Diane Ayer is a writer and teacher from eastern Connecticut. Her writing has received recognition from the Windham Area Poetry Project and from the Connecticut Writing Project’s Teacher-Consultant Writing Contest. Several of her poems were published in Sixfold, Winter 2022, and another poem will be published this summer in the Connecticut River Review
