CALENDULA is a singer-songwriter based in New England. Calendula (Abigail Golec) is the stage name of her folk music project. Her work is inspired by personal experiences and ethos; and musical choices are typical folk, with instrumentation consisting of acoustic guitar, vocals, and banjo. Calendula has an interest in the history of folk music as it pertains to societal change and action for the betterment of communities, especially working class communities.
She began writing as Calendula in 2019, and released her first EP in 2020. Her newest single is called "No Going Back" and it is a commentary on the state of the world, inspired by the protest music of the 20th century, particularly Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie.
Her nostalgia for past homes, daydreamed futures, and distant loved-ones fuels her folk inspired memories. Her upcoming album, Loveletter, focuses on social class and climate justice in hopes of inspiring positive change in her community.
Abigail Golec is a sound artist, musician, and researcher currently based in Connecticut. She is an Artist-In-Residence at The Eastern Connecticut Center for History, Art, and Performance (EC-CHAP). She attained her MA in Music Studies from the University of Amsterdam, and her BFA in Technical Theatre & Design, concentrating in sound design, from the University of Connecticut.
Her artistic practice has developed around a fascination with folk music, soundscapes, and communication methods. While not pursuing her own art, she works as a technical director, video editor, and online distribution officer for Paul Winter and Living Music Records.
Calendula will be joined by Moonbasket. Moonbasket was formed in 2020 by Jeffrey DiIorio and Abigail Golec. Drawing on various musical influences such as Belly, The War on Drugs, and Sharon Van Etten to name just a few, they’ve created songs with a unique blend of singer-songwriter and indie-rock vibes, inspired by love, life, and nostalgia.
